Description:

The hybrid space in music composition:
The use of tactile transduction devices to develop new interactions between the acoustic instrument and the electronic

The central pillar of our research questions traditional relationships between acoustic instruments and the electronic. Through the use of transduction technologies including precisely tactile exciters and bass shaker transducers, we incorporate a third actor into the acoustic-electronic relationship. In this way, we can explore the space in which the acoustic sound – the instrument - and the electronic sound – the speaker – connect.

Objective:

This exploration is proposed through the development of a hybrid space in which instruments or physical objects are used to diffuse signals transmitted by tactile transduction tools, thus combining acoustic and electronic elements. This notion of the hybrid space will allow us to open our musical universe to new relationships between instruments and electronics.

Research-creation project 1: Hybrid-Acousmatic music

The composition of an octophonic piece for a quadraphonic system of speakers and quadraphonic system of transducers, diffused by acoustic objects. (*)

Research-creation project 2: Instrument, resonance and tactile transduction

Composition for one singer with acoustic and electric transduction. (*)

Our approach aims to uncover the possibilities offered by hybrid conception and its impact on composition, sound and scenography.

Composition process: How can one compose for a hybrid ensemble? How can we choose materials in order to capitalize on the possibilities of the hybrid space?

Consequences for the listener: How is the listening experience affected by physical interactions between the listener and the source in acoustic music?

Interdisciplinary aspects: How can we arrange the space in order to maximize the potential of a physical source on a stage?
