INFORMATION REGARDING THE ACTOR COLLABORATIVE STUDENT PROJECT GRANT APPLICATION PROCESS AND INFORMATION: Please read carefully before beginning/submitting your application!
The purpose of the ACTOR Collaborative Student Project Grant is to support research in line with ACTOR’s mission to bring the musical use of timbre to the forefront of scholarship, practice, and public awareness as well as to provide students with funding for the summer period and encourage interinstitutional collaboration among students in the ACTOR partnership.

ELIGIBILTY
Two (2) student applicants per research proposal, each from different institutions, with at least one (1) applicant from an ACTOR academic partner institution.
Student applicants are required to be ACTOR members at the time of application.
Postdoctoral members are not eligible for this funding.
At least one of the applicants must be an enrolled student during the full period of the award.
Each student must be sponsored by an ACTOR member at their institution. If there are no ACTOR members in the institution, students may be sponsored by a faculty member.
DISBURSEMENT AND REQUIREMENTS
The maximum funding for selected applications is $8,000.00 (CAD) per project distributed as $4,000.00 (CAD) per student through each student's institution.
The award will be disbursed as follows: 80% issued in June and 20% after the completion of an online module item for the ACTOR Timbre and Orchestration Resource (peer-reviewed) by 30 April of the following year. E.g., successful applicants selected for funding will receive 80% of the grant in June first year and the remaining 20% in April the following year.
All module items submitted by Collaborative Student Project Grant recipients will be peer-reviewed.
All submissions to the TOR must follow the TOR Submission Guidelines and all accompanying files must be clearly labelled and organized. It is the responsibility of the applicant to curate all data being submitted making sure it is identifiable and understandable to any potential user.
Recipients are expected to present their work at the ACTOR Summer Workshop (in-person, live video, or pre-recorded video with live discussion) in the following year, after the completion of their TOR module item.
APPLICATION DEADLINE
Applications will be accepted on an annual basis on February 1st until 5:00pm EDT !! If the deadline falls on a weekend, applications will be accepted through the following Monday at 5pm EDT.
APPLICATION PROCESS
Applications must be submitted via the Online Application Form.
Applications must include a signed (ink or digital) form from ACTOR advisor.
Late or incomplete applications will not be processed.
SELECTION PROCESS
Applications will be evaluated by the ACTOR Training and Mentoring Committee (TMC). The TMC will select up to four awarded projects per year.
The project proposal will be evaluated on criteria including (but not limited to):
Originality/innovation
Artistic/scientific merit
Interdisciplinarity and plans for collaboration
Impact of proposed Timbre and Orchestration Resource module
The TOR module item could be an article, video presentation, interactive module, or another innovative format. For more format options and to learn how to submit to TOR, see the TOR Submission Guidelines.
Committee members will recuse themselves from deliberations regarding any research project they oversee or that may pose a conflict of interest for them. Any recusals associated with the award winner will be made public when the award is announced.
The winners will be notified in May and will have two weeks to accept or decline the Fellowship.

Previously Funded Projects
Footwork is a style of electronic dance music that emerged in Chicago in the late 1990s. Originally produced as the accompaniment for a distinctive mode of dance—also called footwork or footworking—Footwork is a highly kinetic genre that thrives in a liminal space of perception.
Our project seeks to explore the capabilities of cutting-edge machine learning (ML) techniques for real-time sound analysis in the context of a new composition. Led by Martin Daigle, Pauline Patie, and Emmanuel Lacopo, the project features software such as Rodrigo Constanzo’s SP-Tools to provide real-time instrumental augmentation for the percussion and guitars. Furthermore, it will be used to control real-time interactive visual projections
Amongst Luvale communities in Zambia, drummers tune their instruments by applying ulezo (tuning paste) and heat. In addition to adjusting pitch, this two-step process dramatically impacts timbre. The purposes of this project are to (1) explore the timbral effects of tuning by analyzing audio descriptors generated in the Timbre Toolbox and (2) map these acoustic descriptors onto Luvale timbre descriptors. A data set of individual notes was obtained from field recordings of multiple dance troupes at various stages of the tuning process.
In this research-creation project we wish to use experimental designs from timbre perception research to generate data models that will inform the creation of new compositions for an atypical instrumental duo. We wish to test whether research methodologies can be adopted for use in perceptually informed orchestration/composition practice.
This idea arose from the participants seed idea presented during the CORE Ensemble Project 2021-2022. While one was interested in timbral imitation and emergent timbre, the other used the inflections of Cantonese language to derive musical material. The proposed project aims at combining these two ideas into one, using a more science-supported approach this time.
Compositions for a solo Chinese instrument with the Western orchestra require the composer to consider ways in which orchestration techniques might function in different ways so as to either bring out the solo instrument or to have it blend with the orchestra.
By exploring the relationship between spatial distance and choral blend, this project aims to be the initial step in creating a body of research within ACTOR to evaluate choral blend from the perspectives of both singers and listeners.The results of these studies could be compared in order to understand similarities and differences between two types of sectional performers.
Our research-creation project aims to integrate acoustic drums and various electronics in a semi-structured unconventional composition process. The bottom-up approach will allow both parties to be curious and create a novel piece featuring new timbres and new orchestration applications for the drum kit with electronics. The tools used for this research creation are standard drum kit, microphones, percussion sampling pads, and computer with Max MSP.
